Mastery begins here

I first heard the furious sounds of now-legendary Swedish guitarist when I was in high school. There was a fire and logic to his playing that immediately resonated with 14-year-old me. 

But also, there was a lot of mystery about what he was playing and how he was playing it.

As a self-taught guitarist living fairly isolated on acreage, a decade before the internet and 20 years before social media, there were no reliable and readily available resources for learning this stuff.

And as it turned out, a lot of tab and lesson books I found a few years later made a lot of assumptions about this style of playing. The educators of their time did the best they could, but they were simply off the mark many times.

To this day, I still see the effects of neoclassical shredders in the making using pick strokes and patterns that don't adhere to the systems of the player we all know and love.

I began developing my own insights and information on how the speedy Swede was doing what he did, a process that - to this day - reveals new nuggets of information the further I dig.

In the 90s, I bought Japan-only lesson videos and magazines, slowed down albums and video tapes, and practiced with intensity and an obsession to break down the walls between where I was and where I wanted to be. As someone for whom guitar playing and fast picking didn't necessarily feel very natural, I used ambition and hard work to make up for any shortcomings.

When I had the opportunity to study at The Australian Institute of Music, fellow students (some as a compliment and others as a dig) gave me the nickname Malmsteen. Teachers like Dieter Kleemann praised my technique and marveled at how little effort I seemed to display with my picking hand.

Since those days, I've always dreamt of creating a library of awesome instructional videos so that I could share my breakthroughs and successes with anyone keen to get the same results - without as many forehead/brickwall moments as I experienced.

I don't believe you need to be "a natural" to do what I do... just a keen interest, a good work ethic, and the right method to get you there and map out the journey.

I've done a lot of this work over decades so that it doesn't take you anywhere near as long to get the results I have.
