About

Here's a little about me, my guitar journey, and my approach to learning.

NICE TO MEET YOU

I'm Chris Brooks

I'm a 35-year playing guitarist, educator and recording artist based in Sydney, Australia. What began for me as an obsession with 80s high octane lead guitar has, well, not changed at all.

A former student of the Australian Institute of Music, I exhibited an early penchant for guitar-driven music, whether it was the sideman shredding of Kee Marcello and Brett Garsed, or the solo-artist career paths of Vinnie Moore, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen.

I had a strong idea of what I wanted to be doing with my life very early on. My teenage eight-hour practice sessions were fuelled by lesson material from Hot Licks and REH videos as Brooks, inspiring me to make my own guitar music and instructional content.

Releasing two solo albums, 2002’s The Master Plan and 2011’s The Axis of All Things, I've kindly had support from print and online media worldwide for two decades, including Japan where The Master Plan was included in Young Guitar magazine’s 500 Essential Guitar Albums special issue, and back home in Australia where Australian Guitar magazine included me in a roundup of the top underground guitarists.

I've recorded with Yngwie Malmsteen’s former vocalist Mark Boals, toured with major label band Feeding the Addiction, and appeared on compilation albums for labels including Frontiers (Europe), Marquee Inc. (Japan) and Liquid Note Records (UK).

I created the original "The Yng Way" video course in 2015 and was blown away by the response. Since 2017, I've written 17 guitar method books that have helped at least a couple of hundred thousand people around the world.

It's a joy and a privilege to share my knowledge with the world as I develop more along the way. The journey never stops, and I consider myself the eternal student rather than a master.

Through my books and now through this website, I'm working towards leaving a lasting legacy of educational resources and musical output that will help and inspire guitar players long after I've tuned up for the last time.

My Philosphy

I believe in hard work over talent. Playing guitar didn't come naturally to me, so I've always looked for the method behind whatever I'm trying to learn or get better at.

I didn't even think to use upstrokes for the first couple of years of playing, so I definitely know what it's like to start behind the 8-ball and figure things out to catch up!

The products I create now are for the 14-year-old me that really could have used them back then! As it turns out, they're helping a lot of you too!
